Daily Deviation Suggestion Drive!Back By Popular Demand!
In January of 2012, the community was challenged by `thorns to do something about their complaints on dA. Thus was born this very group! But before the group, it was just a fledgling idea on `Kneeling-Glory's account that began with a DD Suggestion Contest. The results of that contest were overwhelming. And so, under the prodding of quite a few Community Volunteers, we're going to do it again!

Two Poems: A Contest (DEADLINE EXTENDED)NaNoWriMo is on its final wind-down, and many of you are hopefully very ready to terminate your one-month lease of a headspace where editing was unwelcome. This contest is open from January 18-February 18 (PST, aka dA time). No extensions.
The process is simple.
Start with one of your own stories. It doesn't have to be super-fleshed out, but it does need to be written down in some form, even if it's as simple as a series of character sketches and the world they live in.Change something important. There's a lot of options. Ask yourself 'what if X had happened differently' and go from there. Aside from changing key plot points, you may want to significantly alter a character (yes, genderbending is acceptable).

Race for Life 2013
Hello all!
It's that time of year again when I am asking for your help in a cause that is close to my heart. Race for life is a 5K charity run raising money for Cancer Research UK. Cancer Research do life-saving work into preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer.
This is my 5th year in a row doing Race for Life, and every year it becomes more and more important to me. There are far too many people suffering with cancer; too many families, friends and individuals and the work Cancer Research do is so important to help find a cure.
This year, the lovely Kaylee (~CurvyLemon) and my sister Rachel (~racheljj) are joining me in the race- and I encourage any woman in the UK to sign up too!

This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.

So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.

Complaint Challenge Contest!

We got our complaints out in December 2012. Now, 2013 is about doing something productive with them. I am not going to sit and grumble about my pet peeves. Neither should you!
Anyone who knows me should have been suspicious from the start of Phase 1 because complaining is one of my own complaints. (And you saw this trick last year!) That's right. I complain about people complaining. Silly, yes? Well I decided to do something about it with this challenge.

Sure, some of it comes from people whose work truly transcends genres (ever read the Library of Congress classification for Gravity's Rainbow?) and some of it comes from how people choose to interpret certain genres (godsdamnit, 'dark' is not the same as 'horror'! No, this gallery hasn't existed in ~6 years. Stop judging me).
But a lot of it comes from people having trouble navigating the galleries.
Based on your feedback and more backroom discussion, we've reupdated things! Please keep in mind that a lot of discussion went into the updates, so when you do get mad about them do it with the assumption that there's a reason behind this ;p

Feedback Frenzy! (Comment Contest)

A group of very, very devious deviants at #FeedbackFrenzy are hosting
the next site-wide comment and critiquing event!
Our goal is to reward great feedback within the community; to recognize the critics as well as the artists that keep deviantART a thriving environment for education and collaboration.
The contest has already begun!
If you're participating, make sure you read the rules before beginning!

Our first Feedback Frenzy competition was a great success, and now it's time to host a second one. All deviants are invited to join in on this week of enjoyment, community involvement, and reward! This contest is a little different to the previous one - so please read this whole announcement even if you aren't new here!

WHAT: "Feedback Frenzy" is a week-long game that's open to everyone (yes, even YOU)! The goals are; firstly to step outside your comfort zone and practice giving feedback to others, even if not in your own genre; secondly to meet new deviants from across the site; and lastly to receive as much high-quality, usable feedback on your work as possible.

WHEN: December 17 at 0:00 GMT - December 23 at 23:55 GMT (one full week, commencing Sunday)

WHERE: All of deviantART! :heart:

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
  • Registration for this contest has ended! Don't worry, we'll be hosting another one soon!

  • Please include a little bit about what sort of things would be most helpful in a critique within the description of your piece!
    All art mediums are acceptable!

  • You will participate as an individual.
    (whereas the last contest was based on team participation. We are trialing individual participation in this contest. The next contest will trial a choice of the two.)

  • Remember, the contest week doesn't start until December 17 at 0:00 GMT, after signups close; so hold off on critiquing until then!

  • When the sign up period ends, another journal will be posted to signal the start of the contest. You'll have a full week to write your best critiques for as many pieces submitted to the contest as you can!
    You can use either the comment or critique features to provide feedback on deviations entered into the contest. Make sure you're watching #FeedbackFrenzy, so that you don't miss the announcement journal.

  • #FeedbackFrenzy staff will rate the critiques for quality and consistency.
    Since quality matters, one fantastic critique is worth more than ten poor critiques!

  • The participant with the highest total number of points wins!

Great feedback is hard to find - unless you know where to look. We are looking to you, the deviantART community, to show us some of the best critiquing this site has to offer! Beautiful artwork is featured here all the time, now it's time to feature some beautiful comments too. So give us the best you've got - make your comments useful, accurate, applicable, informative, and friendly (but honest) - pull together resources and provide direction for the artist. Remember, you'll be receiving comments through this contest as well as giving them, so write the kind of critique that you'd really love to get in return.


WHAT'S NEW:
During our first contest we were still learning the ropes of running a competition at this scale (we clocked in at about 150 participants and almost 2000 critiques). Based on admin review and your feedback we're making a few major changes:
  1. This will be an individual contest.
    No teams, this time you're on your own! A battle to the finish!
    Loved teams the first time? Fear not! In future contests we'll play with the teamwork aspect a little more.

  2. We'll be posting real time updates!
    We can now track and rate critiques as they come in - this means we can keep you up to date on how the contest is going! We'll be posting the total/average number of critiques written, as well as the average score each day!

  3. Easier application process!
    Since we're not managing teams this time, we've come up with a much faster submission procedure (see above)!

  4. Better deviation organization - Category, Random, and Exposure!
    Now you'll be able to look through the gallery of critiqueables in the contest three different ways! You can either check out critiques by category (searching for your medium, or otherwise to give an outside perspective), randomly, or by the number of critiques already received (share the love)!

From here on out, each contest we run will be a little different, some will have teams, some won't, some will have critique limitations, others will switch up the pieces available for critique! What stays the same though is that our focus will always be on finding and rewarding the highest quality critiques!


PRIZES: :star:
Since quality matters, the #FeedbackFrenzy team have devised a formula to ensure scores are fair. That means, one excellent critique is worth more than many poor critiques!

RULES:
  • You must submit a maximum of two deviations to this folder in order to register for participation. Please do not send a note!
  • Your registration needs to be received by December 15 at 23:55 GMT.
  • Do not start writing critiques right after you sign up! Remember, the contest week doesn't start until December 17 at 0:00 GMT.
  • We will only accept critiques written during the contest week!
  • You don't need to be a Premium Member to participate! Comments or use of the deviantART Critique feature are both acceptable.
  • Only critiques on deviations from this folder (deviations entered into contest) will be accepted.
  • If you delete or hide your deviation entries or the comments you receive at any time before scores are tallied, you will be disqualified.

I'm kind of curious how you'll score all the comments Will you just go through the deviations in the folder and tally up the crits in a spreadsheet or something? (I likes spreadsheets. So efficient.)

Last time, we devised a rubric which allowed us to rate each critique fairly based on a number of different aspects. Each comment then gets a final score. =ziinyu created a external rating tool (i.e. not on dA) which allows us to rate each and every critique with ease. ^SanguineVamp created a special formula to combine the scores and find our winner! :dummy:

I may put up a blog containing more in-depth information if I'm allowed to. No promises though. ;P

Wow, that sounds like a full-time job for you guys, checking and scoring all the comments... I don't envy you. I would be interested in the "more in-depth information" if you are eventually allowed - not to complain about scoring, just because I'm interested. ^^

Lol, last time we had nearly 2,000 critiques .. yeah, definitely a bit of work there. :giggle: Luckily, we did have a fairly sized team of judges :nod: Although I can't say I completed my fair share of judging, there were a few people who did a lot more than others :lol: I did have the honour of rating the last critique though. :P

Once you get the hang of it, it's not too difficult - and can even be fun. The rating tool automates a lot of the process, it brings up both the critique and deviation for you. All you need to do is sit there, read the critique, and click to answer a few questions. Not a difficult process at all. :)
